Children’s Play

(Honolulu, Hawaii)  We are so excited to perform our fall production of Just So Storytime . 
This play is based on three of Rudyard Kipling's Just So Stories: "How the Whale Got His Throat", "The Elephant's Child", and "The Beginning of Armadillos".  All three whimsical stories are set in the, "Far off times" at the beginning of the world, and each imagines how different animals came to be the way we see them today. KHSPAC's Acting Studio will share with you the art of Story Theatre.  The actors will be “physicalizing” different animals, as well as voicing and manipulating puppets in a varying array of styles.The puppets will represent multicultural themes, including those from Chinese, Indonesia and Indian cultures.Targeted for younger audiences, but fun for all ages, Just So Storytime will be performed on Saturdays, October 26 and November 2 at 7 p.m., with 3 p.m. matinees on Sundays, October 27 and November 3. Kids under three are free, ages 3 to 4 are $3, and students, military and seniors with I.D. are $5. Adult tickets are $10. Box office opens thirty-minutes before each performance for ticket sales.Kaimuki High School is located at 2705 Kaimuki Ave., between Kapahulu Ave. and Kapiolani Blvd.

Kaimuki High School Performing Arts Center loyal fans likely remember our past performances of Pirates of      Penzance, Little Shop of  Horrors and Grease, which  was our most recent and successful production to date.  This year we celebrate 26 years on the stage by presenting the Hawaii premier of Violet!  Violet Karl of Spruce Pine, NC is about to embark on a odyssey to visit a Preacher she has seen on TV, hoping that he can heal the disfiguring facial scar she’s had since adolescence.  As she travels through the Deep South of 1964, she meets two soldiers who may be called to fight in Viet Nam, who fall in love with her, and discovers that even though the scar cannot be healed, she can still heal her soul.

 

Dramatic issues addressed in this show include: whether beauty is physical or internal; what it is to grow up in a place where, because of a physical disfigurement, you are considered bad; racial issues in the Civil-Rights Era South and military, as one of the soldiers is White and the other Black.

 

Based on the short story "The Ugliest Pilgrim" by Doris Betts, this Wizard of Oz-style quest story features music by   Jeanine Tesori, composer of "Caroline, or Change" and "Thoroughly Modern Millie" and won the 1997 New York Drama critics Circle Award for Best Musical, the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Musical, and the Obie Award Special Citation for Jeanine Tesori's music.

 

Our enthusiastic and talented actors, represent various public schools from Hawaii including Farrington, Kaimuki, Kalani, McKinley and Roosevelt High Schools and Jarrett and Washington Middle Schools.  They will be joined by KHSPAC alumni, all working together to produce a fantastic evening of entertainment.  Come join us!

Violet will be performed on February 22^nd, 23^rd and March 1^st, 2^nd, 8^th and 9^th at 7:30 pm.  Additional performances are on February 24^th and March 3^th and 10^th at 3:00 pm.    With ID, elementary and high school students, military and seniors citizens over 65 are $6.  Adult tickets are $12. Announces Auditions for

“Violet”

 

Kaimuki High School Performing Arts Center holds auditions for its spring musical production of “Violet” Dec. 3-5.  Students enrolled at any public school on Oahu are encouraged to try out.  This audition is open to students from grade 7 to grade 12. Play Production credit available to qualifying students.

Auditions will be held Dec. 3 and 4 from 3:00 to 6:30 p.m. at KHSPAC’s auditorium.  Callbacks only on Dec. 5, from 2:30-6 p.m.

 KHSPAC is looking for committed young actors, singers, and dancers for the cast of the Hawai'i premier of "Violet", a musical about a young girl's journey of self-discovery.  Violet, who was disfigured as a child, finds herself alone in the world, and sets out from her small home-town  traveling by bus to meet a faith-healer in hopes of restoring her beauty.  On the way, she meets several fellow-travelers who help her to learn valuable life-lessons about her own character and the true meaning of beauty.

Performers should come prepared to sing at least 16 bars of a Broadway song from traditional Broadway repertoire (shows like “Big River,” “Memphis,” “110 In The Shade,” “Sister Act”). Country or Gospel songs are also options. No pop or rap songs. Please bring sheet music written in the key you will perform it – a pianist will be provided.  No recordings will be allowed.

Performers should prepare a memorized monologue about one minute in length for the acting portion of the audition. Come dressed in appropriate dance clothes and shoes for the dance audition.

Rehearsals at KHSPAC  begin with a read-through of the play on Tuesday, December 11, 2012.  If you are cast, you must attend the read-through. 

Monday-Friday rehearsals 3:30pm to 6:30pm; Saturday rehearsals 10:00am to 4:00pm (TBD.) Performances run from Feb. 22 – March 10. Please bring conflict information for Dec. 11 – March 10 to the auditions.

Production team includes Jenn Thomas, Director, Nanilisa Pascua as Music Director, Deanna Luster, Choreographer with Set Design by M.J. Matsushita.
