(Honolulu, Hawaii)  We are so excited to perform our fall production of The Pied Piper of Hamelin
It's time to pay the Piper! KHSPAC is excited to perform our version of this famous German legend. The Piper comes to Hamelin and leads all the rats out of town, but when the Mayor won't pay up, the Piper plays a different tune.
Targeted for younger audiences, but fun for all ages, the show will be performed on Saturdays, October 25 and November 1 at 7 p.m., with 3 p.m. matinees on Sundays, October 26 and November 2. Kids under three are free, ages 3 to 4 are $3, and students, military and seniors with I.D. are $5.  Adult tickets are $10. Box office opens thirty-minutes before each performance for ticket sales.  Kaimuki High School is located at 2705 Kaimuki Ave., between Kapahulu Ave. and Kapiolani Blvd.

ABOUT KHSPAC:  Kaimuki High School Performing Arts Center offers classes in acting, music, dance and technical theater at no cost to public school students all over Oahu. Under the direction of M.J. Matsushita, the program and its musical and dramatic productions involve about 160 students who present three major productions per school year.  KHSPAC is one of three Department of Education learning centers for performing arts on Oahu

Kaimuki High School Performing Arts Center Rocks Rocky Horror

I have seen a lot of good theatre over the past couple of weeks: the ambitious and stunning jingju at UHM, the daring and creative Icarus Fights the Minotaur at HTY, and Moa a Mo‘i at Kumu Kahua, a fascinating ensemble piece—its finale about the Westernization of Hawai‘i  packed a wallop. But today I want to salute the fine work of UHM alumna M.J. Matsushita and all those who make the Kaimuki High School Performing Arts Center (KHSPAC) possible.

My daughters and I went last night to see Rocky Horror Show, directed by another UHM alumna Jenn Thomas.  If you don’t know about KHSPAC, it is somewhat like a magnet arts program, in that students from any island public schools can audition to take part in their productions.  Since most public middle and high schools on the island do not have theatre programs of their own, KHSPAC really fills a void.  They perform in the ample KHS theatre, and M.J. makes sure the technical elements are first class.  The arts in our public schools face so many challenges, from lack of resources to lack of respect.  How better to support them than by having a great night out at the theatre?

This production is the first high school production of Richard O’Brien’s The Rocky Horror Show in Hawai‘i; some would say it’s too risky to involve teenagers in a show that features a sweet transvestite, pelvic thrusts, and a finale about giving yourself over to pleasure.
I’m so glad they took the risk!  The evening became a bonding moment for my girls who are RHS “first-timers,” and we had enormous fun. Before the show, we bought three kits of approved items: no toast, but we had newspapers, confetti, toilet paper, and party hats.  The evening began with a helpful instructional video created and narrated by Tommy Barron, whose deliberately badly synced instructions set just the right tone for a PG-13 production.  Throughout the evening, the crowd (which included little kids, teenagers, and a lot of people who, like me, first went to the movie over thirty years ago) participated by talking back to the stage, waving lights, and dancing.  My daughters were only slightly embarrassed by my Time Warp antics.

Design-wise, the production looks lavish, with a grand set (insider info tells me it only cost $500!), including a spectacular staircase and appropriately goofy space alien devices.  The leather and lace costumes are delightful (not all characters show a lot of skin, but some of the young men are boldly bare).  The band is great, and so is the cast.  All of the leads are talented and engaging.  Malia Lane as Janet (trollop!) and Dylan Bell  as Brad (schlemiel!) are nerdily charming.  Jorin Young as Columbia is a triple-threat: tap-dancing, singing, and making us feel her pain at Eddie’s loss.  Sean Ramsey is a compelling Riff Raff, paired with Sarah-Marie Daniels, a diva-like Magenta.  Rocky (Alika Bright) is charming, painted abs and all.  The Criminologist (Natasha Fehn) turns out to be one of the sexiest parts of the show.  Poasa Aga as Eddie rocks the house, and Taylor Silva uses her great voice to animate Dr. Scott.   And of course there’s Dr. Frank N. Furter, played with perfect panache by Christian Jay Quinto, who charmed the audience with energy and elegance; Cocoa Chandelier would be proud.  Aided by a large chorus of creepy phantoms, these cast members made the show their own.  Director Thomas clearly brought her own passion for the show to a new generation.

Rocky Horror ends with an inspiring theme, perfectly appropriate for teenagers who are struggling to come into their own:  “Don’t Dream It, Be It.”  We could all do well to remember that message.

Aloha Rocky People!

Our next rehearsal will be this Saturday, January 4th from 10am - 2pm at KHSPAC. We will be doing character work, finding the mood/spirit of the show, and doing a play-through of the entire script. Come ready to move and to use your voices and creativity! Get to know the music - at least the general melody/meaning of your songs. (Phantoms - listen to the backup singers on each soundtrack - not sure which we're using yet.)

Please bring a snack to sustain you, or something to share if you are so inclined, since we will be rehearsing through all reasonable lunch-times. We will take a break.

Please let me know if you cannot make it to any portion of this rehearsal - I have your conflicts, but they're not in one place where I can look, yet, so, hard to keep them all straight.

Tuesday is your last day to turn in - in writing - any conflicts you may have overlooked, or were not able to give me specific dates and times. You cannot miss rehearsal without an excused conflict in writing. Tuesday, January 7th.

Please share this info with your parental units. I will re-post this to the Facebook page. I will send this schedule to your parents' emails - hopefully tonight - oh, so  many emails to add to the list!

Does anyone have school on Monday, Jan 6th? Not sure how to schedule that day yet, but for Tuesday, Jan 7th - I am waiting to see who we need that day, may be full company for music rehearsal.

I sent you all an email via Dropbox with the 3 soundtracks we will be working from. You will need to load Dropbox onto your computer/electronic device, and load the music from there. Please use the soundtracks for inspiration - do not copy other actors artistry - find you own, it's so much more interesting and authentic! Let me know if you have a problem loading the music.

Happy New Year!

The Rocky Horror Show Audition Reminder

Kaimuki High School Performing Arts Center

Announces Auditions for

The rocky horror show

Kaimuki High School Performing Arts Center presents their spring musical production of “the rocky horror show” from February 21 – March 9, 2014.  Students enrolled at any public or charter school on Oahu are encouraged to audition.  This audition is open to students from grade 7 to grade 12. Play Production credit is available to qualifying students.

Auditions will be held December 11 and 12 from 3:00 to 6:30 p.m. at KHSPAC’s auditorium.  Callbacks only on December 13, from 2:30-6 p.m.

KHSPAC is looking for committed young actors, singers, and dancers for the cast of The Rocky Horror Show.

The Rocky Horror Show, with music, lyrics, and book by Richard O’Brien, is a story of self discovery and being true to your own nature.  It is also a humorous tribute to the science fiction B movies of the 1950s.  The musical tells the story of newly engaged couple, Brad Majors and Janet Weiss, who take shelter from a storm in an old castle – which happens to be inhabited by mad-scientist-alien, Dr. Frank N. Furter, who is about to unveil his newest creation, “Rocky”.

The musical, originally produced and directed by Jim Sharman, premiered in London, at the Royal Court Theatre (Upstairs) in June of 1973, moved on to several other locations, and closed in September of 1980.  It ran for a total of 2,960 performances, and won the 1973 Evening Standard Award for Best Musical.  Its 1974 debut in the US in Los Angeles had a successful 9 month run.

The play was adapted into a film, and released in 1975 as The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The film is the longest-running release in film history; it has never been pulled from rotation of its original release, and continues to play in cinemas all over the world.  The film, as well as the play, has become the very definition of a cult classic.

Rehearsals at KHSPAC begin with a read-through of the play on Wednesday December 18, 2013.  All actors are required to attend the read-through.  We will take a holiday break from December 23  -January 3rd resuming rehearsals on Saturday, January 4th.

Monday-Friday rehearsals 3:30pm to 6:30pm; Saturday rehearsals 10:00am to 4:00pm (TBD.) Performances run from February 21 – March 9. Please bring conflict information for December 17 – March 9 to the auditions.

Production team includes Jenn Thomas, Director, Nanilisa Pascua as Music Director, Deanna Luster, Choreographer with Set Design by M.J. Matsushita.
